Kenn's Cards of the Week 7
Mood:  caffeinated
Now Playing: World Chamionship 2007 because I need to wait twelve more days before I can get World Championship 2008Cry
Topic: Kenn's Cards of the Week

Well, it’s been two weeks since I last checked in with you all, and I’m back with a bit of something for you all to test out, and some sideboard tech updates, anyway, here are the cards of the week!

Majestic Mech – Goryu, Kinetic Soldier, Chiron the Mage

Well, I’m so happy about my new partner, Majestic Mech – Goryu, ever since I lost my beloved Dark Magician of Chaos, I just couldn’t seem to get back into the game, but for a while, I tried teching in a Gilford the Lightning, but he just needed an extra Tribute that I couldn’t give, at least not without Scapegoats, but it was against his Religion, so we parted ways.  Not long after that, I was introduced to Majestic Mech – Goryu from my Traditional friend, Majestic Mech – Ohka, and I’ve never been so happy in my life! Not only is he stronger than my old Dark Magician of Chaos, but he also pierces and punishes those annoying Defense-Position Monsters, and even better, he wants even lass tributes than Dark Magician of Chaos!  But he does need to go away for a little while after that, but my best friend, Light and Darkness Dragon helps me see him again in no time at all, and then, we’ve had so much fun, we’ve won the duel by smacking a pre-emptive Scapegoat!

If you’ve no clue what I just rambled on about, I basically said that Majestic Mech – Goryu pretty much smacks Dark Magician of Chaos to the RFG, takes on Tribute and puts a pretty strong monster in the grave for your Light and Darkness Dragon I know you’re running.  And after all of that, your opponent Goats on an end, Specials out D-HERO Bloo-D, and you’re left to Treeborn, Sacrifice one for Goryu, then smack a token, always fun.

Now, the next two pretty little girls come from my Sideboard reevaluation.  Since this specific Robo-Sissy was piloted in a majority of Sideboards at Shonen Jump Championship – San Mateo that basically said to your opponent “You summon Elemental Hero – Stratos, I’ll smack him with a 3350 ATK level four” it basically punishes loads of Hero-based builds, and a fair bit of Macro and D.D. builds running D.D. Survivor.  Not to mention the rising advent of Six Samurai builds. The only adverse effect that can come from him is that he gets negated by D-HERO Bloo-D, who, even if after absorbing your Dark Magician of Chaos or Light and Darkness Dragon, could still be smacked down by Kinetic Soldier with 50 ATK to spare!

*coughs*eventhoughitwouldsmackforevenagainstanabsorbedmajesticmechgoryu*coughs*

Love it yet?  No?  Then you have no reason to still be playing this game.  Just Kidding. Or am I?  No, but really, I’m just joking, even though you should love him

Chiron the Mage, turn any spell card in your hand into a Mystical Space Typhoon (Essentially).  How can you not love it? I mean, sure, he’s easily outshone by the likes Mei-Kou and Twister, but to those of us who really, really, REALLY like to maintain more FIELD and LIFE advantage, Chiron is for you 100%-ly.  I think I’ve said what I needed to say about him now.

Oh, I almost forgot, check back in for specific Sideboard builds, I’m going to do to following builds:

Anti-Monarch

Monarch Transformation

Anti-D.D.

D.D. Transformation

Anti-Meta

Coverall Sideboard vol. 2.0

Ye Olde & Ye Neaux

Raigeki Break, Vortex Trooper

Well, here I am with my new picks and decided to look at some cards that just might make an impact this format.   First, let’s examine the old tournament winning Raigeki Break, which I think may work a bit better than Phoenix Wing Wind Blast in a bit of cases.  Let’s break it down, firstly, Dark Magician of Chaos, now, while a Phoenix Wing Wind Blast would give out a dead draw, and force your opponent to tribute two to summon him, but then again, it also gives you opponent another Spell Card.  But, using Raigeki Break will remove him from play, and keep him away from your opponent.  Secondly, Destiny Hero - Fear Monger, Recruiters, Mad Reloader, D.D. Assailant, and others that need to be destroyed as a result of battle to activate are rendered useless,  in many occasions, I have attacked, and have had been attacked by these monsters in order to pick up on their effects faster, depending on the situation. In many instances, my opponent found him or herself handless and in the need of cards, I’ve had my opponent Kamikaze their Destiny Hero - Fear Monger into one of my monsters, because, quite often, people won’t attack him knowing you have a Destiny Hero- Disc Commander in the Graveyard.  Raigeki Break will ruin these monsters’ attacks easily, but wait, why run these over Sakuretsu Armor?  Simply put, because of the discard.  It will put your Treeborn Frog or Destiny Hero – Disc Commander into the Graveyard, and if you’re not running either, it works against cards like Swords of Revealing Light, Premature Burial, Call of the Haunted, Call of the Mummy, and Card of Safe Return, and it’s also even still better because it can be flipped at any time!

Now we get to Air Circu- ahem, I mean Vortex Trooper, and while I am extremely used to its Japanese name, its new English name is quite fitting, due to its secondary effect “When this card is destroyed, draw 1 card.”, an effect shared with Card Trooper.  Now, to the “Why should I run this weak piece of crap that needs to be Normal Summoned?” question.  Simply put, summon it, put 2 cards you don’t need back into your deck, then draw 2 then wait for him to get killed, then draw a card, or just set him to draw 1, and if your opponent runs Pulling the Rug, and don’t quite completely understand his effect, they might flip it on him, and you can still get the draw!  Or try one of my favorite moves to do with Sangan, or Trooper (prioritizing his mill) in a Diamond Dude Turbo, summon him, then flip Torrential Tribute, you’ll get his Mallet Effect, then his destruction will yield you to net a +1 with his draw, and that goes without saying, you cleared the field!  This leaves you open to Premature Burial or Call of the Haunted to bring back a Dark Magician of Chaos, etc.  Look for it in the new Gladiator's Assault Special Edition.

Deck Builder- The Basic "Block-All" Sideboard
Mood:  amorous
Now Playing: with my RaiDa, Reggies this Saturday!
Topic: Kenn's Cards of the Week

It’s been half a week since my Evil Hero article, and introduced my “Block-All” Side, which has gone through a couple of small changes since then, namely these

-2 Solemn Judgments

-3 Pulling the Rug

+1 Burial from a Different Dimension

+1 Dark Bribe

+3 Divine Wraths

I noticed that, although utterly amazing, Banisher of the Radiance hurt a little too much to really even out with its upside, but since he shuts down Sangan, Card Trooper, Destiny Hero – Malicious, Cyber Phoenix, Mystic Tomato, Shining Angel, Giant Rat, UFO Turtle, Mother Grizzly, Flying Kamikiri #1, Destiny Hero – Fear Monger, Mad Reloader, Giant Germ, Nimble Momonga, Light and Darkness Dragon, and LOADS MORE, even decks like Ratbox, RaiDa, A Perfect Circle, and Zombies!!!  And although it isn’t as obvious, it shuts down GADGETS, yes, gadgets, they get one use, they get killed, and then The Transmigration Prophecy is flipped, or Pot of Avarice is dropped, and then they get to be reused, Yay?  Sorry, Banisher REMOVES, but I digress, I’ve strayed largely from the point I was trying to make.  Burial from a Different Dimension allows you to reuse removed cards, and while the one was originally used to counter D.D. Crows, the second helps with reusing cards from your removed pile to offset Banisher’s amazingnessocity. The one and one Dark Bribe and Solemn Judgment allows for you to get the overall protection from God, and free Spell/Trap protection from a Drunken Official.

Also with the side, I’ve finalized that Twister is the best choice out of Twister/Mei-Kou, Master of Barriers/Dust Tornado, because of its overall utility.  Twister isn’t as susceptible to the “I’ll MST your set on your End Phase” as Dust Tornado is, and it isn’t as restricted to Continuous cards, like with Mei-Kou.  And while the other two options are still open, Twister can hit those pesky Premature Burials and Swords of Revealing Light.  But I still must say, Dust Tornado should only be used if you really have no other options, as Traps need to be run tighter, and Dust Tornado would be pushing it a bit over the limit.

Now, here’s Divine Wrath, replacing Pulling the Rugs, for the simple fact that, although it does have a cost over Pulling the Rug’s costlessnessocity, it can be flipped whenever the monster activates, and allows for a much wider range of defense, instead of just Monarchs and Gadgets.  Now we have defense from Zombies, Snipe Hunter, Light and Darkness Dragon, Destiny Hero – Plasma, Six Samurai, and Dark World. Yayness, much?

OK, so here’s the entire Sideboard list

2 Jinzo

2 Banisher of the Radiance

2 D.D. Crow

2 Burials from a Different Dimension

2 Twisters

1 Dark Bribe

3 Divine Wraths

1 Solemn Judgment

And here’s the part where I talk about the other two cards

Jinzos are fairly obvious, he stops all Traps in their tracks, except for a certain few that can be flipped on his Summon, like Skill Drain, Torrential Tribute, Trap Hole, Bottomless Trap Hole, Shadow-Sealing Mirror, Solemn Judgment, and Divine Wrath, just so you all will know that he has so many faults, and still gets away with it.  Now we get to D.D. Crow, another obvious card, but still, some people need this one spoon-fed to them.  Discard D.D. Crow from your hand, remove a good monster in your opponent’s grave from play, then laugh at them as their only target for Premature Burial is weaker than your Cyber Dragon, and won’t let them draw 2 cards.

Light and Darkness Dragon, Destiny Hero – Bloo-D, Spell Striker, and the quintessential

Light and Darkness Dragon Deck

I’m so sorry for being away for so long, but school has been hell, my professors all decided to have 5 page papers due at the same time, so I’ve been going through hell, but I still found the time to build a new deck, with a new theme, based on a new card, ready to rock the new format, that card of course, is none other than the “overly” hyped Light and Darkness Dragon.

Now, I’m assuming you all can read his effect so I’ll just clarify some of his rulings.  His effect is compulsory, one step up from mandatory (like a maintenance fee), so instead just of being forced to activate it, because he’s multi trigger, you’re forced to activate it on Chain Link 2.  He can only be placed on a chain once this is so he doesn’t keep going crazy negating everything, and it gives you a bit of an advantage protecting him, for example, when he’s so weak, and you need to save your Life Points, flip up a Shrink, have your Dragon activate, then flip a Mirror to save yourself, but forget the Dragon, but we’ll get to that later.  His values cannot drop below their minimum, this means he can only negate FOUR times unless you increase his ATK and DEF, but in this case, it’s his DEF keeping you from going to 5 negations, so he’ll lose 2000 off of his initial 2400 to get to 400 DEF (leaving him with 800 ATK, which is a step up from 300, forget if he gets killed, we just don’t like too much damage).  And finally the cake-topper, he cannot negate preexisting continuous effects, as he stops only the activation of effects, so don’t’ worry about your Jinzo chilling there, he can take care of traps so LaDD can only negate spells and monsters, letting him drop slower, but who cares if he gets killed?  Now for why I keep emphasizing my nonchalantnessocity about his death, we want him to get killed.  You see, when he gets killed, you get to Special Summon anything you can, including that Dark Magician of Chaos you got discarded, or your Disc Commander chilling there while you wait for a Fear Monger.

And while I believe I covered everything on the dragon, let me slyly transition into Destiny Hero – Bloo-D, one of the best cards to be rocking in a LaDD deck, because he fits the rest of the disruption so well, you just can’t say no, but don’t forget, this deck isn’t all about disruption, its more or less making your opponent waste their resources to run over LaDD to summon out a stronger monster, but back to Bloo-D, his explanation is simple, 3 tributes, continuous monster effect negation (so LaDD can’t stop him) and his absorption may not be the early-union absorption of Relinquished and the Thousand-Eyes Restrict, but to think, I’m moving my opponent’s monster to a place where they can’t get it back.

So now we get to the little guy, the one who hasn’t seen much play, the one who can be special summoned practically for free, the one who can attack directly, and the one who takes no battle damage when destroyed.  Still scratching your head? I’m talking about Spell Striker, of course, and let me tell you this, he’s essential in this build, think of your Treeborn Frog, who activates every Standby Phase, who will drop your LaDD to 800 ATK in no time at all.  Now don’t call me a hypocrite just yet, I’m not saying that LaDD is meant to stay out, just that the more field time he gets, the better. So now you need a replacement for Treeborn, something that special for damn near nothing, something that is as fast to be Special Summoned the turn you topdeck it, so no Trap Monsters here, what do you turn to?  This guy and the best part is, during all of my testing and tournament play with him, people refuse to get rid of him! 600 direct?  Fine, I won’t waste my Mirror or Phoenix on it, but what they don’t realize is that that 600, it stacks up.  And if your opponent has a nice lineup of Marshmallon, Spirit Reaper, and Gemini Summoner chilling in defense, not much better than to Special Striker, go direct, and then offer it for Raiza, the Storm Monarch to destroy Reaper via Reaper’s effect.  So, If you'relooking for a fast as all hell Fodder Generator, go for this little guy, you won't regret running him.

And now that I’ve outlined the headliners, I’ll give you the build to go along with its pretty, pretty OreoTMBrand face, and our very first decklist for the CookieCutters who have supported the Yu-Gi-Oh! Trading Card Game metagame for oh, so long

Shield Crush, Black Magic Curtain, Dark Bribe

Well, it’s that time again, and with a (marsh)MALLOwer schedule, I've gotten to do three reviews again!  And first off is one of my favorite cards ever!  Shield Crush!  Now I know all of you are probably thinking “Yeah, but Nobleman removes all copies from play”, but I say, deal with the immediate problems first, and if you made the mistake of siding out Fissure in Game 2, and you DON’T topdeck Nobleman, if you attack into a Marshmallon, he’s going to be there for a while.  So here we have this situation, you attack into Marshmallon, then two turns later, you drop Crush to PWN Marshmallon and sweep for game.  And don’t forget that Crush works on sets, too!  And this goes without saying that it sucks to remove your own Magician of Faith, or Crystal Seers.

And another of my videogame faves!  The Black Magic Curtain!  It’s a great endgame card to let your Black Magician run rampant and sweep in, well, game range.  While the curtain sounds like the half of your LP, and the inability to play monsters face-up (that’s right, you can still set, but you won’t get Apprentice’s effect because he is technically a special summon that evades Torrential, etc.) is a HUGE cost, they’re right, but this is a card that you use to kill with, especially in a Black Magician Aggro, where you can kill in as early as the second turn with this card.  Now here’s the situation, first turn (Turn count 2) you summon an SKDM, Crush, attack, Dimension, DM, attack, TC4, BMC for game.  Now, while this is less splashable than say, Crush or my first three reviews, which work great in almost any deck, this deck need to be made right.

And here’s the last, but certainly not least, Dark Bribe, a promo from the new Yu-Gi-Oh! GX Tag Force 2, Bribe is like Magic Jammer and Seven Tools of the Bandit…ON CRACK.  Dark Bribe can easily be run in a playset, as it’s free S/T negation, and its being a Counter Trap means that the only cards that can stop it are Solemn Judgment (just think, them blowing half their LP to get ANOTHER Bribe in their face!), Counter Counter, and another Bribe!  The costless aspect of this card makes it great tech times a million, and your opponent’s draw can easily be offset by their loss of a card effect.  And even though it’s only just been released, it’s already OU’ed!!! Expect to see this on the next format, it’s that great.

Kenn's Cards of the Week 2
Mood:  a-ok
Now Playing: KCVDS
Topic: Kenn's Cards of the Week

Well, this week I'm only doing one review this week due to a hellish weekly schedule (but don't worry, it'll be a big E HERO Special!), but I'm doing it on one of my favorite cards printed, Hero Counterattack.

Ok, common, Elemental Hero related, I bet most of you are thinking that this is just a random piece of crap that won't help anything at all.  But then there's the little guy, the E-HERO user that's discovered the Wildedge OTK and just lacks the spunk to get his game into gear.  This card is for him.  A bit A Hero Emerges, a bit Magical Dimension, a bit Pwn4g3, Let's just examine this card.
Activate only when an E HERO  monster you control is destroyed as a result of battle.  Your opponent selects 1 random card from your hand, and if that monster is an E HERO monster, destroy 1 monster your opponent controls, then Special Summon the monster.
Now, this is very self explanitory, "What if your opponent selects something that's not a monster?" easy, pretend you've set a Morphing Jar and set the other cards!  Now, you might want to set your Hero with this card, so your opponent will probably guess a Jar with your sets, and then attack freely, only to have Counterattack flipped up on them to take out their main attacker and get you out a Bladedge! 200 points above most everything else, not to mention the beautiful Piercing effect that can slam down on a pretty little set (or for the less- Mirror Force inclined duelists, my favorite MF replacement, Windstorm of Etaqua can really screw over your opponent). and a primo choice to throw with Counterattack.  Or the next best thing, Necroshade, who is a huge target, but is that bad?  He dies, and then you can Normal Summon Bladedge with no tribute!  It's a Win-Win Situation! And don't forget, you still get a free monster destruction, so you can easily smash face on an open field afterwards!

Card Destruction, Foolish Burial, Instant Fusion

Hmm, how many times have you ended up with a bad hand? More often than desirable, I’m sure, and as many players will use Reload or Magical Mallet to refresh their hands, they’re not truly effective. So let’s do the math 40-6+5=39 before your draw, so that’s roughly an 80% chance that you’ll get the same hand. And then there’s Card Destruction, which has so much more to offer than any of them, as it offers not only a refreshed hand, but also disruption and thinning, and a 100% new hand! With a 5 card thinner deck, it also assists you to get to your stronger cards faster, and the discard drops off your higher-level monsters to the much more accessible Graveyard. And finally, the disruption aspect, do you remember the little spell that rained hell most of the last format? “Pay 1000 Life Points. Look at your opponent’s hand and select 1 card in it, and discard that card.”. That’s right, Confiscation, now let’s look at it this way, “Why bother paying 1000 to discard one of my opponent’s cards, when I can discard them all and draw in the process?”

Now here’s a Predicament, you’re staring down a Mobius the Frost Monarch, and you’re sitting on a Premature Burial with only a Sangan and Old Vindictive Magician in the grave, the rest of your hand gone like Chaos decks, and I’d bet you’d love to have a Dark Magician of Chaos in there right now to pick up on your dead Brain Control. Well, the new Structure Deck: Revival of the Dragon Lords (SDRL, a modified SD13) can grant you that wish! The new spell, Foolish Burial, lets you select one monster from your deck and send it to the grave, where cards are right there in front of you to see what you can do with them. Now you can laugh even more obnoxiously when you pick up on Destiny Hero – Malicious into a Destiny Hero – Dasher for those last 2100 Life Points.

In a metagame filled with Monarchs, faster fodder with no drawbacks, like Soul Exchange taking away your attack, or Premature Burial taking away your, well, Premature Burial, is greatly needed. And the solution to this predicament, Instant Fusion is a great way to get out quick fodder that will let you keep your attack, and a great fusion monster like Dark Balter the Terrible or Fiend Skull Dragon in the grave that won’t waste your Premature Burial. And here’s the best part, IT’S UNLIMITED. And especially now, in this fresh format, this little box of Top Ramen will surely lead to other little discoveries in the form of Level 5 Fusion Monsters, in fact, I just recently unearthed my Series 1 book and whipped out some Musician Kings to Magical Dimension into Dark Magician.
